EdF Nuclear Graphite Conference

Science and Engineering in Collaboration to Support Safe Operation of the Graphite Reactor Cores

The fifth EdF Energy Generation Ltd Nuclear Graphite Conference will take place at THE GRAND HARBOUR HOTEL Southampton Tuesday – Thursday 10th-12th May 2016 (arrival and check-in from 2pm, Monday May 9th).

16171896759_e85a712d19_bThis conference will be the fifth in a series which has charted the extensive research and modelling of the irradiation behaviour of the graphite moderator in the UK Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors which has contributed to the successful production of safety cases for continued reactor operation well beyond their original design lives, thus playing a vital role in maintaining adequate electricity supplies in the United Kingdom during the transition from fossil-fuelled generation to extended reliance on renewables and new nuclear.

The previous conferences, held in Cardiff, Nottingham (East Midlands Conference Centre), Aston and Nottingham (again, The National College) attracted attendances of nearly 100 delegates representing the key supporting organisations to EdF Energy, specialised University research departments, consultants and regulators. The full proceedings of each conference have been published following comprehensive peer review, either by The Royal Society of Chemistry or by EMAS Publishing, and this will also be the case for the 2016 conference.

Conference Themes

The main theme of the conference is “Science and Engineering in Collaboration to Support Safe Operation of the Graphite Reactor Cores”, and abstracts may be submitted in any relevant discipline – engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science, statistical or structural analysis, etc.

Special sessions with the following more specific topic areas for discussion are under consideration:

  • Microstructure: Is there a common position amongst the specialists on what really counts (to determine irradiation behaviour)?
  • Irradiation Creep: Is irradiation creep just an amendment upon dimensional-change behaviour?
  • Reactor Inspection: Can we inspect just part of a core to understand the state of the whole core with adequate confidence?
  • Cracking of Components: Are the consequences of cracking greater for single cracking compared with doubly-cracked bricks?

Papers need NOT, however, be confined to these specific topics, and contributions on all aspects of the nuclear graphite life cycle (in the AGR context) will be considered.

Abstracts are now Invited

Abstracts of between 100 – 200 words (diagrams and figures are not recommended) should be prepared in Microsoft Word according to the ABSTRACT TEMPLATE. On no account should they exceed one page of A4.

Abstracts should be submitted simultaneously to:

Please use the subject line EdF Graphite Conference Abstract for your e-mail

PLEASE NOTE THIS IMPORTANT DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSTRACTS!

Abstracts must be received by 28th FEBRUARY 2016

Receipt of all abstracts will be acknowledged.

FOR ALL ABSTRACTS ACCEPTED, A FULL PAPER WILL BE REQUIRED, TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE SAME ADDRESSES NO LATER THAN 30TH APRIL 2016

It is extremely important that these deadlines are adhered to!

The TEMPLATE for the full papers can be found here: EdF Conference Paper Template

INGSM-17, Sept. 5th – 8th 2016

17th International Nuclear Graphite Specialists’ Meeting
September 5th – 8th 2016
(Opening Reception Sunday September 4th at 7pm in Der Wilhelmshof Hotel)

Aussenaufnahme_Abend
United Nations complex in Kaisermühlen, Vienna, Austria

INGSM-17 will take place at THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY, which is located within the United Nations complex at Kaisermühlen, Vienna, Austria (also known as ‘UNO City’ and adjacent to the Vienna International Centre [‘VIC’]). All conference sessions will take place in Room M3 (Building M sits between Buildings B and A and will be found to your left after you enter the final security barrier: go up the escalator from M ground floor then walk around to the REAR – straight ahead then two left turns! – and find the room entrance on your left).

Delegates are expected to arrive into Vienna on Sunday 4th September and there will be a welcome reception at HOTEL DER WILHELMSHOF in the evening.

This conference will continue the series begun at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, in 2000. The annual conferences continue to explore the entire nuclear graphite life cycle and the technical issues which are presented in the design, operation and decommissioning of graphite-moderated nuclear reactors.

The previous conference held in September 2015 in Nottingham (UK) attracted nearly 100 delegates representing the key international design organisations, plant operators, specialised university research departments, consultants and regulators. INGSM presentations are archived within the IAEA Knowledge Base on Nuclear Graphite, and this will continue with presentations for the 2016 conference.

Accomodation

Blocks of rooms at preferential rates have been reserved in two hotels:

Classic Hotel Wien, Praterstraße 72 (booking deadline 8th July 2016)

Der Wilhelmshof, Kleine Stadtgutgasse 4 (booking deadline 15th May 2016)

Booking forms for the Classic Hotel Wien and Der Wilhelmshof are downloaded here.

Both hotels are within 200 metres of Praterstern station which is accessible directly from the airport by S-Bahn (S-7, interval 30 mins, departures approx. xxh10 and xxh40), and Praterstern also offers a direct link to the IAEA via U-Bahn Line 1 (alight Kaisermühlen – VIC and use the forward exit which opens directly to Gate 1). Both hotels are within a reasonable walking distance of central Vienna (but see information under TRANSPORTATION).

Hotel costs ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE REGISTRATION FEE and must be settled directly with your hotel.

Many other hotel choices are available, either in the old city, the environs of Stadtpark, or adjacent to the IAEA – for the latter area, search for Park Inn by Radisson, ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser or NH Danube City, all on Wagramerstraße and within sight of IAEA, but be aware that you will need to use the U-Bahn to access the centre of Vienna in the evenings.

Local Transportation

Local transportation in Vienna is extremely cheap, efficient and safe, and will be used for travel between hotels and the IAEA, for trips into the inner city for dinner, and for the social programme. Delegates are strongly advised to obtain a weekly ticket (‘Wochenkarte’) from the self-service machines either at the airport train station or any U-Bahn station. This costs €16.20 at the time of writing, and is valid from one minute past midnight on Monday September 5th for seven 24-hour periods. Instructions on how to purchase tickets can be found here: InstructionsOBBmachines

Whatever time/day you arrive at Vienna International Airport, this ticket is NOT valid for the whole of your journey into the city. You are strongly advised NOT to take the ‘City Airport Train’ (CAT) which is outrageously expensive and does not deliver you to a useful destination unless you have chosen a hotel somewhere in the area of Stadtpark.

Assuming that you will take either one of the recommended hotels, or a hotel near IAEA, use S-7 local train (usual destinations are Floridsdorf or Laa an der Thaya). On Sunday, purchase also a two-zone ride single fare (€4.40), on Monday morning and after you need only a one-zone ride (€2.20) because your Wochenkarte covers the rest. If purchased at the airport, neither of these tickets need be validated as they will be date-stamped by the issuing machine. The touch-screen machines offer four languages!

Train-ticket machines are located in three places in the airport: upon leaving customs turn to the right. There is one on the right at the top of the ramp down to the station (and an actual manned ticket office, but only open at times to suit themselves). There are more machines at the entrance level when you go through the two sets of automatic doors, and further ones on the platform.

S-7 arrives to Praterstern in approximately 30 minutes and the recommended hotels are nearby. Exit the station to the south and cross the tram/bus station and then the main road. The Classic Hotel Wien is straight ahead along Praterstrasse – 100 metres on the left. For Der Wilhelmshof, turn to your right, staying on that road until you see Kleine Stadtgutgasse as second turning on your left. The hotel entrance is 50 metres on the left-hand side.

For hotels near the Agency, transfer at Praterstern to U-1 (destination of train is ‘Leopoldau’), and your destination station will be ‘Kaisermühlen – VIC International Centre’. The hotels are on the main street to your right (facing the direction of travel). Exit from the rearmost platform to access a subway under the busy road.

Any additional travel on Sunday will require a separate ticket, which MUST be validated before starting your journey (‘Entwerter’). Such tickets can be purchased at any U-Bahn station machine.

Once in possession of your Wochenkarte, from Monday morning you need only carry it with you and present it on demand (rare). It is valid on U-Bahn (all) and on trams, buses and the S-Bahn within zone 100, which is huge – i,e, for all your journeys to and from IAEA, and trips into the inner city for dinner. You will also need it for the social outing on Wednesday. However, it will NOT take you all the way back to the airport. It is valid as far as Schwechat, two stops short. Further instructions on how to purchase a ticket at an ÖBB machine, before you set off in Praterstern can be found here: InstructionsOBBmachines.
